Holiday Lights New and Old

The "New" Way - Lights in Parallel

Two lights, two circuits. Two separate circuits can be constructed using a single electrical power source. Note that each light bulb is connected to the battery by its own circuit.
A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. Since the circuits are independent, when one bulb burns out, the other stays lit.
A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. There are many ways to hook up the wires to obtain a complete circuit for each light bulb. Bulbs in this type of configuration are said to be connected "in parallel."
A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. When a light bulb loses its filament, only that light goes out. It is clear which position needs a new bulb.
A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. Many bulbs may be connected in parallel.
A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. Most new light strings are designed with the lights in parallel. When one bulb burns out, the others remain lit. And, there is no question about which bulb needs to be replaced.
